Answer
·  Which Xbox Linux distro is faster?

Technically, Gentoox should be the fastest as its compiled from source, however people asked for KDE which is bloated and slow, so this will make it seem slow. I recommend using XFCE (now included with Home v3.0) - this will GREATLY increase speeds!

·  How do I shutdown Gentoox?

DONT JUST HIT THE POWER SWITCH!!! You must run "reboot" or "halt" to turn off your Xbox -- either command takes about 1 minute to execute so be patient! If you have used the power switch and cant boot up again its because youre filesystem is corrupt -- you will have to either use Sparkle or reinstall Gentoox.

·  How do I install Gentoox?

Read this

·  How do I login as root?

Open a console and type: "su -" [enter] followed by your root password (default is 'xbox' without the quotes).

·  How do I install additional linux software?

Login as root then type: "emerge software_name". For example, to install Gnome type "emerge gnome"

·  My graphics are garbled or are black and white - how do I fix this?

Make sure you are fully updated with magic, then run `xbvset` and choose the correct parameters. Composite cables should always work, however, on some Xbox models HDTV and S-Video cables may produce scrambled or off-colour graphics. Using NTSC in a PAL region may cause your Xbox to display graphics in black and white as may using PAL in an NTSC region.

·  I noticed some cool updates on your website, how do I install them

Login as root and type "magic" then follow the on screen instructions

·  I cant get Gentoox onto my F drive, what do I need to do

Download Resctoox, boot it... then run "sh /bin/f-drive" and follow the instructions!

·  Hmm, I want Gentoox back on E drive...

Download Resctoox, boot it... then run "sh /bin/e-drive" and follow the instructions.

·  Can I install Gentoox directly to F:

Yes! As of Gentoox Home v5.0 and Pro v3.0, you can. You must follow the FTP tutorial here.

·  I've closed the onscreen keyboard -- how do I get it back?

Look for an "XVKBD" shortcut in one of the menus. This will launch the keyboard.

·  I like pie!

http://www.weebl.jolt.co.uk/jazz.htm

·  My screen is all off-centered and too big!

Run "xbvset" as root! This will not correct problems for v1.6 Xboxes, sorry!

·  Will Gentoox destroy my hard drive and stop me from storing games on F?

It _CAN_. If you do not want to destroy the contents of your hard drive, DO NOT choose to "initialise" the hard drive while installing and DO NOT select "native" as your installation type. All other types of installation ("e" and "f") are non-destructive - that is to say, they will not delete any of your data other than previous Gentoox installations (if present).

·  Where are all my Linux files?! I cant find them from EvoX's FTP!!!

They're all stored within "rootfs" which can only be accessed by Linux

·  How can I access my xbox stuff from within Linux?

Ensure that magic has fully updated your Xbox, then:
cd /mnt/fatx/e << this is your E drive
cd /mnt/fatx/f << this is your F drive

·  Ok, I used up all my 4GB but I want MORE SPACE!

Run "magic newfs" and follow the instructions. You might also consider switching to a "native" installation where your storage is only limited by your HDD size.

·  I changed the resolution in KDE and now it wont load up again -- have I broken it?

Most probably. Try running "xbvset" as root.

·  I ftped across the rootfs file but FTP says it has a negative filesize??? Did I do something wrong?

No, this is a bug in the way FatX works... Ignore it.

·  Ok, I installed everything like you said, but when I boot, I get this:

..c: cannot open dev/console: No such file or directory>br> panic: Attempted to kill init!”

I'm afraid you didn't install everything as specified. Seems like you either have everything in a sub dir on (like E:gentoox ootfs). MAKE SURE ALL FILES GO IN THE ROOT OF THE INSTALLATION PARTITION. If you have done this correctly, then there is a chance your rootfs is corrupt. Reinstall Gentoox if this is the case.

·  Mplayer messes up my video settings when a play a movie, how can I stop it from doing this?

Start mplayer with the following commands flag: -novm (i.e. mplayer -novm)

·  How do I disable the onscreen keyboard (XVKBD)?

Run "keyboardtoggle" from a console as root.

·  Why does emerging constantly fail?

Your clock MUST be set CORRECTLY. To do this, run the following command as root:

date MMDDhhmmYYYY

For example, for Jan 24th 2004 10:38pm:

date 012422382004

·  How do I setup a proxy?

If you need a proxy setup for magic or emerge, do this:

1) su -
2) Enter root password
3) nano -w /etc/profile
4) Add the following lines:

export http_proxy="machine.company.com:1234"
export ftp_proxy="machine.company.com"
export RSYNC_PROXY="machine.company.com"

Obviously fill in the correct details!

5) Hit ctrl-x, then y, then enter to save changes
6) source /etc/profile

There... you should now have proxy all setup!

You may need to use 'emerge-webrsync' to sync instead of 'emerge sync'. MAKE SURE YOUR CLOCK IS SET PROPERLY BEFORE SYNCING (run 'date')!!!!

·  Why does KDE start with more than 1 virtual keyboard?

You logged off KDE with a keyboard open and it saved it to a session file, so each time you log back on, it opens the programs that were running when you logged off. The solution to this is to close all running programs, then log off and reboot. Next time you start KDE, there will be only 1 keyboard!

(Note: KDE no longer saves sessions when logging off so this FAQ entry is now for historic interest only)

·  My Xbox freezes at Gentoox Loader

Try unplugging ALL of your controllers or putting them in different ports then reboot.

·  EvoX freezes when starting Gentoox

While I don't support EvoX... people still use it so I'll provide this answer here but will not discuss it again. Turn off IGR! (Either edit it from evox.ini or from the setup menu). You have to turn it off in ALL 3 places.

*Update*
Make sure you have the latest version of EvoX installed as this bug has now been fixed.

·  I've read all the info in readmes and on this site, but im still scared about installing Gentoox!

Well, the best way to learn about how to do something is to see it in action. You can download WATCHME.rar from the Downloads/Misc section. Inside this .rar file is a video which shows you the entire installation process recorded from an Xbox. It will show you what to do, and how to do it :)

WATCHME is now included in the Home and Pro downloads.

·  Can I run more than one magic at once?

Why would you want to?

Magic is a sequential patching system, i.e. it patches things in a predefined sane sequence. If this sequence is interfered with things will start to break. Also, running two magics at once could cause the same patch to be applied twice etc... DONT DO IT!

(Magic now stops you from doing this)

·  I just put a new HDD in my xbox but it wont let me install Gentoox!

Your harddrive must be fully formatted to the standard Xbox partitions (including F if you have an F partition). A blank hard drive wont be properly recognised by the gentoox installer unless you choose to "initialise" the hard drive at the beginning of the installation. Note that this will destroy any data that may have been present on the hard drive.

·  When I first start Gentoox Home, it just seems to hang after displaying my IP address.

SSH into your Xbox using the displayed IP, login with the following details

User: root
Pass: xbox

Then run "xbvset" and follow the on-screen instructions. Repeat as necessary.

·  What shouldnt I let etc-update update?

1) /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
2) /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3) /etc/make.conf
4) /etc/conf.d/gpm
5) /etc/conf.d/net
6) /etc/init.d/halt.sh
7) /etc/rc.conf
8) /etc/fstab
9) /etc/sudoers

AND Anything else YOU have personalised and feel should remain unchanged. Use your common sense here.

To stop these from being updated, find them in the etc-update list, select the number corresponding to one, e.g.

5) /etc/make.conf

You type "5" then hit enter.

Then you type "2" to delete the update

There, simple. Now repeat this for all of the items on the above list. Once you are happy that all of the items remaining on the list are safe to update, type "-5" and this will update all of the remaining files. If you did everything right, nothing should get broken!

If you did happen to overwrite any of these, you will need to run "magic uhoh". If you reboot before managing to run "magic uhoh", you will need to boot into Resctoox, then mount the distribution's root filesystem, chroot to it, then run "magic uhoh".

·  I did an F: installation, can I put the vmlinux, gentooxx.xbe, linuxboot.cfg and initrd.gz files on my F: partition now?

NO! The only files that should be on the F: partition are "rootfs" and "swap" NOTHING ELSE!

·  I cant see anything, its too small and/or blurry! (XFCE)

In XFCE, right click on the desktop, select "Settings > All Settings" then select "User Interface". Finally, click the font "Sans 10" then change the size to 14, click ok and you're done! The reason I didnt do this by default is because it can cause some applications to take up way too much screen space (e.g. Xchat).

·  Can I change the language in KDE to ?

Yes, you first need to add the following to /etc/make.conf:

LINGUAS="xx"

Where "xx" is your (usually) two digit international country code. E.g. the United States would be "us".

You then need to run 'emerge kde-i18n' as root, then you can select the language of choice in the KDE control center. The reason for not including all regional is because it's a massive 340MB.

·  Where are all the Gentoox wallpapers? (Home)

They're all in /home/gentoox/.wallpaper which is a hidden directory!

·  I cant see anything when I boot up, what can I do?

You can edit linuxboot.cfg, add this line to the append line in your config.

video=xbox:800x600,nohwcursor,hoc=X,voc=Y

Basically, you can change the resolution here, and the horizontal (hoc) and vertical (voc) overscan correction. Tested resolutions are 640x480, "hoc" and "voc" are specified as percentages, (X and Y are defaults which are just ignored - they should work for everyone!). You can set these to hoc=10,voc=6, for example. The default settings _should_ work for everyone!

The "nohwcursor" is what fixes the garbled cursor graphics.

You shouldn't normally need to edit this file manually as xbvset is the front-end for making changes. However, if you enter invalid settings into xbvset it may cause your screen never to initialise properly.

·  Why do my DVDs jerk in mplayer under XFCE?

Specify "gmplayer -vo x11 ....." to make DVD playback smooth.

·  In XFCE, why is the Screensaver icon broken?

This is intentional! XScreensaver can be added by running "emerge xscreensaver". It was not included because the only way to break out of the screensaver is to enter your password - not everyone has a keyboard so this would have lead to many people having to reboot each time they went idle (or login via VNC).

·  Why does my screen go all garbled when I load Frozen-Bubble?

You have to be in 640x480 mode to play this game!

·  KDE is asking me to fill in some localisation details when I start it but the window is too big.

Just close the window using the "X" at the top right.

·  How do I access VNC?

Either go to http://xbox_ip:5800 in a Java enabled web browser, or download the VNC client (www.tightvnc.org) and connect to "xbox_ip:0"

·  When I try entering the login details with the on-screen keyboard nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing! You just need to click the "Focus" button the keyboard, then click in the username text box. Typing should now work correctly.

·  Help! I cant get my old BIOS back!

Download Resctoox and follow the instructions for reflashing a BIOS.

·  I get stuck at initialising network!

This is usually down to your clock not being set. There are two ways of setting the clock, one is to load the MS dashboard and do it from the settings menu, the other is to download and run Resctoox, then type the following in the SSH command prompt:

"date MMDDhhmmYYYY"

E.G for 5:30pm 14th of December 2005:

"date 121417302005"

·  Not enough free space on E:

The installer (Stardust) keeps saying that you dont have enough space on E: ... because you dont have enough space on E:!

Certain tools may report that you have 4,500,000 bytes of space on your drive... and they are quite correct. But remember, 1KB is 1024bytes. This means that you need 4,718,192 bytes free to install Gentoox.
